Anti America Oct Religion American

Oct 22-23 – four articles, all relating to shiites 1 – “US Must Counteract Image In Muslim World, Panel Says” – Oct. 1 st, front page (refered in 4) – Basically states that hostility towards America is at shocking Trends levels, and spending millions on public relations, hiring a white house coordinator and other useless things will change this. – States that millions are being spent, but hardly any in Arab area – Only quotes members of the panel, and what they find “disgusting” – no quotes from common man – Front page Countered in: 4 – “Washington’s Sour Sales Pitch” (refers to 1) – Oct. 4 th, op-ed, (f. p. = “Employment Rises) – Says doing that is useless, as government is messenger to the world – Says most PR is offensive propaganda, lists the many things 2 – “Iraqi Villagers and G.

I.’s In an Uneasy Coexistence” – Oct. 1 st, pg. 10 – Focuses on innocent civilians being attacked, but still states that “the vast majority of the country was calm, peaceful and rebuilding” – signs of hope, despite the civilian destruction. – Stuck in the back, pg. 10 3 – “Two U. S.

Soldiers Are Killed in Iraq; One Of Them Is A Woman” – Oct. 2 nd (f. p. = “Bush seeks $600 m for Iraq”), pg. 14 – Focuses on the who and what of American soldiers being killed, not the why. Numerous descriptions of how they died, not so much who killed them or why.

– No interview sources, just statistics on how many Americans died. No statistics on other troops. Very biased. – In the back, pg. 14 5 – “Roadside Bombs Kill 3 Soldiers and a Translator in Iraq” – Oct. 8, pg.

18 (f. p. = Californian recall) – Story tells very little about the actually killings, only one paragraph really – Links together otherwise differing pieces of information – protests where they chant “God is Great” along with “You Americans are afraid of him”, implying that the differences are due to religion more than anything else – Along with the anti-Americanism are paragraphs stating what achievements America has had for the day, implying ideas about religion before explaining they were quelled. – Uses only one quote, but completely disagrees with it a sentence later, stating “conditions had improved since Hussein was ousted.” 6 – “Car Bomb Kills 8 at police station in Baghdad slum” – Oct. 10, f. p.

– brief mentions of anti-American behaviour – uses language to imply that assassination of Spanish diplomat was not because of their support to America, but “suspicion immediately fell” when one American soldier is killed. Also uses a quote from one Iraqi officer to support Americans. 7 – “Iraqi shiite anger raises new fears for U. S.

soldiers” – Oct. 11, f. p. – uses words like “seething throng” in describing the anti-Americans – tries to calm down the idea of anti-American feelings but quoting the group as “thugs” and quoting an American official as calling them a tiny group. – states that ‘accounts differ’. First tells the Colonel’s side of the story (4 paragraphs), goes on to say that the Americans might ” ve fired first (1 paragraph), but goes back to say that it was an ambush, refuting the fact that it might ” ve been the American’s fault.

– brings in ideas of religion – concern for “establishing an Islamic state” 8 – “Car bomb kills 6 at Baghdad Hotel, At least 35 hurt” – Oct. 13, f. p. – very unreliable – quotes General Krivo again, and disputes his claims with witnesses, but doesn’t focus on these alternate stories – only uses army sources, and quotes them as saying everything is “back to normal” – keeps Iraqi side of the story to a minimum: “There was suddenly a great explosion” – keeps information on treating the wounded to a minimum, discusses very little the consequences – includes an extra couple paragraphs on shiite pilgrimage as a form of propaganda, mentionining it was ‘forbidden’ and ‘banned’ by hussein numerous times 10 – “Attacks North of Baghdad Kill 3 G. I. s and Barely Miss Governor of Iraqi Province” – Oct 14, pg.

10 – Krivo 17 – “Anti-US Cleric Harangues, But Iraq’s Shiites Heed Four Ayatollahs” – Oct 22, pg. 6 – overuse of ideas of religion – in the Religion section – tries to restate ideas that America has already done wonders for their religion – pilgrimage to Najaf – links religion with the ayatollahs, plays down ideas of sadr – portrays sadr as another tyrant, and tries to show that he is too young to influence – smoking a cigarette.
